GM Robot ad misses the mark.
Posted in The Journal on February 7th, 2007I really don’t care to much for the Super Bowl or the ads in it. But this one ad had gotten my attention. Why? Because there is a robot in it of course. I’ve argued this with others but I think the commercial was bad. I have seen some argue the ‘Suicide’ angle of it. I’ll agree that was in bad taste too but what I found to be the most damaging was being made to feel empathetic towards a machine. Just Google “GM layoffs” and you’ll see where I’m coming from. Between 2006 to 2008 they are going to let go almost 100,000 employees. Yeah I know the commercial was a dream sequence and all but still it’s a slap in the face to people who lost their jobs to one of those robots. With all the negative press this commercial has gotten, I actually believe GM’s corporate execs who signed off on this thing, still wont see anything wrong with it. It’s all about the dollar and pleasing share holders.
I’ve actually argued with a sixteen year old who intelligently explained to me that, “GM is just reinventing itself and will have full production back again in five years and those people will have work again.” Hey thats great Fuck face, let me just make a phone call to the bank which carries my mortgage and let them know I’m going to be sixty months late, fucking moron. I can’t wait for life to smack you in the face.
